Metabolic Syndrome

Metabolic Syndrome is the name for a group of risk factors linked to overweight and obesity that increase your chance for heart disease, diabetes and stroke. Metabolic syndrome can be diagnosed when a person has at least three of these heart disease risk factors:

  • A large waistline, presenting as an “apple shape”
  • High triglycerides, a type of fat found in the blood
  • A low level of HDL, or the ‘good’ cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • High fasting blood sugar

The goal of diet and exercise for someone with metabolic syndrome is to reduce the risk of heart disease for that individual. Diet can be modified to:

  • Decrease LDL, or ‘the bad’ cholesterol
  • Decrease high blood pressure
  • Help control blood sugar, which can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes
  • Minimize the effects of controllable underlying risk factors
  • Help manage weight
  • Exercise can help to raise HDL, or ‘the good’ cholesterol level
